1. Gytha, can you tell us a little about your background and what led you into the world of interior design?
I grew up with nomadic parents, living in everything from cottages to castles, from the mountains to the sea. That experience gave me an ingrained understanding of so many different styles and, more importantly, how to actually live in them. I never had a clear idea of what I wanted to do, but my mother was brilliant at interiors, so I thought—why not give it a go? First I studied Fine Art and Furniture at Sotheby’s Institute before going on to train at Inchbald School of Interior Design in London and I was fortunate to graduate top of my class at Inchbald and have never looked back.
What I gleaned from living in such varied homes was an instinct for how different spaces function - not just in terms of style, but in how people actually live in them. Whether it’s a grand house with an army of staff or a simple cottage, I understand those different lifestyles on a deep level, which means I instinctively know how to make them work.
2. What inspired you to create the Colour Course Masterclass?
The real lightbulb moment came at one of the Truffles and Ruffles lunches. We had to go around the table and say what we do, and I found myself saying out loud that I’m an interior designer - but that the process has changed so much over the years. Clients don’t just want a finished home handed to them; they want to help shape it themselves. Gone were the days where I was left to my own devises and they would arrive 2 years later suitcases in hand!
At the same time, a client told me that my approach to design felt instinctive, and that combination got me thinking: How can I help people design their homes without having to go through an entire interior design course for a year? As a designer, I’ve seen that one of the biggest stumbling blocks for people is their colour palette. I knew firsthand just how emotive colour is, I’ve seen time and again that if a client dislikes a colour, they can’t see past it, no matter how perfect the piece is in shape or style.
For me, working with colour has always felt natural because I’ve never let outside noise or rules influence my choices. But I realised that most people struggle with colour because they overthink it instead of trusting their gut. That’s why I created this course - to strip away the overwhelm and help people reconnect with their natural sense of colour in a way that feels effortless, not intimidating.
3. What’s the biggest misconception people have about working with colour?
That there’s a ‘right’ and a ‘wrong’ way to do it. Colour is far deeper than rules - its perception is unique to each of us, so it should be free of constraints. We all react differently to it and thank goodness - imagine how boring the world would be if we all liked the same things! It’s not about formulas or trends. People get stuck because they’re trying to follow rigid guidelines instead of learning to trust their own eye.
4. Why do so many people struggle with choosing colours, and how does your masterclass help overcome that?
Most people struggle with choosing colours because they’re looking in the wrong place for answers. They overthink it, second-guess themselves, and get lost in rules and trends rather than trusting what instinctively feels right to them. In the masterclass, I guide them through my signature process, an entirely different way of seeing colour. This helps them break free from overwhelm and find palettes that feel natural and effortless. It’s about tuning into what they’re drawn to, rather than just saying, “I like blue - now what?”
5. Who is this masterclass designed for?
It’s for anyone who wants to build their confidence with colour - whether they’re designing their own home or working professionally. It’s especially helpful for those who feel stuck when choosing colours or who play it safe because they’re afraid of making a mistake. Just to clarify - since colour is such a strong word that often leads people to think of brightly coloured rooms - this masterclass is for all types of colour palettes, from vibrant hues to incredibly muted neutrals. It works quite literally for any colour palette under the sun!
6. How do you help people move beyond their comfort zone and embrace colour with confidence?
I help people move beyond their comfort zone by shifting the focus from fear to instinct. I show them that they’re already making natural colour choices in other areas of their life, like in what they wear every day. Many people hold themselves back because they’re afraid of making a mistake, but when they stop seeing colour as a set of rigid rules and instead connect with it emotionally, they start to embrace it with confidence. My signature process gives them a complete palette, removing the confusion about which colours to pair together. This means they can trust the process and feel empowered to use colour in a way that feels truly natural.
7. What’s the most common mistake people make when working with colour?
Many people struggle with choosing colours because they’re overthinking it. They get caught up in rules, trends, and second-guessing themselves, rather than trusting their instincts. In my masterclass, I help people break free from that overwhelm by guiding them to focus on what feels natural. They’ll learn to connect emotionally with colour and trust their gut rather than relying on a rigid formula. Through my signature process, I take the confusion out of pairing colours, helping them feel confident and empowered to create palettes that feel effortless.
8. What can attendees expect from the masterclass?
A completely fresh way of looking at colour - one that feels intuitive and liberating rather than overwhelming. They’ll learn a method they can use again and again, whether they’re designing a single room or an entire home. The course will guide them through selecting colours in a way that flows naturally, creating a palette that feels effortless and uniquely theirs.
